Abstract

Summary. The purpose of the work. The aim of the article is to comprehend the situation of modern man in the context of the unanimous reading of Marcus Aurelius and Donna Tartt’s book “The Goldfinch”. Methodology. The article uses the method of in-depth reflective reading, which involves such a criticalanalytical explication, which relates not so much to the work itself, but to those features of the anthropological situation, as evidenced by art in this case. The theoretical basis of the study is the understanding of philosophy, when it appears as a self-consciousness of thought, clarifying the path of formation of subjectivity. Scientific novelty. If academic historical and philosophical commentary focuses on the harmony of harmonious life with the principles of reason and the disclosure of the specifics of understanding it, then modern perception is characterized by eudemonic perception, when virtues and knowledge are significant to the extent that they allow to maintain peace of mind. success. It is argued that the logic of a happy life has a somewhat sad connotation – it is a life in harmony with the universe, over which man has no direct control, so the human to rebirth becomes ephemeral. Philosophical content is leveled to the technique of psychological stability. In contrast to the social therapy of pop stoicism, art, which focuses on the classical theme of the formation of the human in man, testifies to the emergence of man in the dimension of real philosophizing, different from the practices of psychological calm. Conclusions. The modern eudemonistic revival of Stoicism distorts the Stoic program: turning to the evolutionary theory of understanding human emotions and values reduces human existence to a biologically understood life, and this leads to contempt for philosophy if it does not become a therapeutic means of balance and peace. Technically conscious development of the attitude of invulnerability blocks a person's creative ability to rise above himself and overcome their own limitations. In secular civilization, classical art becomes a means of going beyond the otherworldly, taking on the traditional religious task of loving what Death has no power over.
